Ingredient Notes

Oreos – I recommend using the regular Oreo cookies and not the double stuffed ones so you don’t end up with too much cream in your Oreos crumbs. Melting chocolate – I personally love Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers because they melt and harden the quickest, plus they taste great! You can also use regular chocolate chips, chocolate almond bark, or even candy melts if you want. You’re just going to melt and pour the chocolate so as long as it melts and hardens, it should work. Candy eyeballs – I like the smaller candy eyeballs for the spider eyes on these Oreo spider bites, not the jumbo ones I used in my monster marshmallow dip. Cream cheese – I recommend full-fat cream cheese and make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it’ll mix in well with the Oreo crumbs to create your Oreo spider balls.

How to Make Oreo Spider Treats

I mentioned it before but these special treats are so easy to make that kids can do them with just a little adult supervision (while using the food processor). It’s just a matter of creating the Oreo balls, making the chocolate legs, and putting it all together!

1 – Make the Oreo balls

Put the Oreos into a food processor until you have very fine crumbs. If you don’t have a food processor put the Oreos in a zip top bag and use a rolling pin to roll them into fine crumbs! Take 2/3 of the Oreo crumbs out of the food processor and set them aside. If you make more Oreo crumbs than you need for this recipe, you can always use them in this dirt and worms dessert. Cut the softened cream cheese into chunks and add it into the food processor with the rest of the Oreo crumbs. Mix together until blended well. Scoop 25 small balls of the Oreo mixture using a small spoon, tablespoon measuring cup, or a melon baller. Roll each scoop into a little ball. Place each of the balls into the set aside Oreo crumbs and coat the spider body in the Oreo crumbs.

2 – Make the Spider Legs

Melt the chocolate in a small microwavable bowl, stirring about every 20 seconds until melted. Put the melted chocolate into a small squeeze bottle or a ziploc bag and make a very small cut in the corner of the bag. Pipe lines that look like spider legs (or L shapes) a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. You’ll need six legs per spider, and I recommend making more in case the legs break, so I recommend piping closer to 200 than the 150 you need. Put the cookie sheet filled with the spider chocolate legs into the freezer for about 10 minutes or until they are completely hardened.

3 – Finish the Spiders

Place a small dot of melted chocolate onto a candy eyeball and place it onto the spider’s body. If the chocolate is too hard already, just put it back in the bowl and melt the chocolate melts again so you can add your cute candy eyes. Once the legs are hardened, put six legs into each spider’s body to finish off this cute Halloween treat! Be gentle but press firmly so the legs will stay when you move these onto a plate. This tasty treat is ready to eat as soon as they’re done or you can put them in the fridge and leave them chilling until you’re ready to serve them!

Expert Tips

Store these in an airtight container in the refrigerator so that the cream cheese doesn’t go bad. They’re a little tricky to store with the legs on so if you know you’re not going to serve them yet or want to make them ahead of time for a classroom party for example, store the Oreo balls in the fridge and the chocolate legs separate. Then just put them together right before you’re ready to serve. Make sets of legs a similar size so you don’t end up with little tiny legs, longer legs, and spiders full of off weird shaped and sized legs. Freeze the legs for at least ten minutes but longer is even better. You want them to be completely set before you start putting them onto the spider bodies.
