“Minoxidil is an easy-to-use topical treatment that stimulates blood flow to stop thinning while promoting newer and thicker growth,” says Geeta Yadav, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology. “When using minoxidil, it’s critical to get the product directly onto the scalp for it to work, so I recommend parting the hair in several places and massaging it in.” She adds that some minoxidil formulas can make the hair sticky or tough to manage, so it makes sense to apply it before bed versus in the daytime. That way, you have it on your head for a good six to nine hours but can rinse it away in the morning. Also note that minoxidil must be used daily to maintain results. Another one of Dr. Yadev’s preferred minoxidil products is Rogaine, which is available in 2% and 5% concentrations. This is also a favorite from Bryan Cantor, celebrity makeup artist, hair stylist, and groomer. “Spray this on your hair before you do your blowout, focusing more product on the roots, and then hold your head straight while blow drying your hair and lifting it up, perpendicular to the ground,” he says. “For maximum volume, blow-dry your roots by holding them flat against your head in the direction away from their natural fall.” These ingredients work to volumize and thicken, and as a bonus the formula conditions while it works. Simply work into damp hair, making sure to thinly and evenly coat your strands, then style per usual. To get the most out of your blowout, he recommends flipping your hair over and spraying the roots starting at the back. Lift each section gently and spritz, then flip back over and manipulate your hair into your preferred style. “It’s made of keratin fibers, just like real hair, that are dyed to match your color,” explains Dr. Yadev. “Once you dust it on, it grips to your natural hair and plumps up every strand. Plus, it’s waterproof so it won’t come off until you shampoo.” She adds that you can help lock everything into place with a touch of your favorite hairspray.
